West Linn Ready - Emergency Management

The City of West Linn Emergency Management Program is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery activities related to hazards, disasters, and emergencies witin city limits. The goal of the program is to protect public health and safety, while minimizing property loss and damage to the environment.

  • Mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening or eliminating the impact of disasters through prevention.
  • Preparedness is a continuous cycle of planning, managing, organizing, training, equipping, evaluating, monitoring, and improving activities to ensure effective coordination and capability to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from the effects of natural or man-made disasters.
  • Response includes the mobilization of the necessary emergency services (police, fire, and ambulance) and first responders (public works) in the disaster area.
  • Recovery works to restore, rebuild, and repair the affected area to its previous state after immediate needs are addressed and the emergency or disaster is resolved.

The City of West Linn will do its best to prepare and respond to an emergency or disaster, and will work in partnership with its residents to recognize that the responsibility for individual emergency preparedness resides with the community members.

How to Prepare - Be 2 Weeks Ready

Being prepared starts at home. During the February 2021 Ice Storm, residents who experienced power outages were without power for an average of almost 4-days; and some were without for longer. All residents are encouraged to practice and prepare your home emergency plan. As we have recently experienced, emergency situations can change rapidly and there may not be much time to prepare once you receive an evacuation notice. Being ready helps ensure your safety and access to vital resources and information you need.

When starting your emergency preparedness planning, focus on resources and food that you and your family will need to survive on your own for at least 72-hours.

Prepare an outage kit that includes:

  • Flashlight or headlamps.
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and alarm clock or watch.
  • Car charger for your cell phone, laptops and/or tablets.
  • 72-hour supply of ready-to-eat food and water.
  • Extra blankets.
  • Bottles water for people and animals (if you rely on electricity to pump water).

There is no one correct way to put together two weeks’ worth of supplies since everyone has individual dietary, medical, and household needs. If your family includes children, seniors or pets, you will have additional needs. All emergency kits will look different, the American Red Cross has put together a resource guide called Prepare. There is a weekly Disaster Preparedness Calendar on Page 15 and a list of items to start building your kit, on Page 23.
